A former Soviet military officer credited with averting a possible nuclear disaster at the peak of the Cold War has died at the age of 77. Stanislav Petrov was on duty at a Russian nuclear early warning centre in 1983 when computers wrongly detected incoming missiles from the US. Although his training dictated he should contact the Soviet military immediately, Petrov instead called the duty officer at army headquarters and reported a system malfunction. Petrov, who retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel, died on 19 May but news of his passing became widely known only this month, thanks to a chance phone call. German film-maker Karl Schumacher, who first brought Petrov's story to an international audience, telephoned him to wish him a happy birthday on 7 September only to be informed by his son, Dmitry Petrov, that he had passed away. Government interference with Indians' internet usage has risen steadily in recent years, leading to fears authorities are attempting to curb free speech, digital advocacy groups say. An increase in internet shutdowns since Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office in 2014 has raised questions about online rights under his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Government officials ordered 42 internet shutdowns between January and August, compared to six times in all of 2014, according to data from the New Delhi-based advocacy group Software Freedom Law Centre (SFLC). Nalin Kohli, a national spokesperson for the BJP, said suspending access to the internet was acceptable in cases "where rumour-mongering or motivated misinformation could lead to the incitement of violence". As researchers were wrapping up excavations in El Perú Waka’, a small settlement in northern Guatemala, one scientist unexpectedly found the hidden bones of an ancient Maya ruler. “He accidentally came into the foot of that tomb, and there they stared at the bones of the king,” said research co-director David Freidel. The team of archaeologists and anthropologists from the El Perú Waka’ Archaeological Project then proceeded to call in the Guatemalan army to secure the region—standard procedure to prevent looting, Freidel said. The remains are a male, buried “head to the east, wrapped in textile, and placed on top of his offering vessels,” said Freidel.
