Stanislav Petrov, who averted possible nuclear war, dies at 77

A former Soviet military officer credited with averting a possible nuclear disaster at the peak of the Cold War has died at the age of 77. Stanislav Petrov was on duty at a Russian nuclear early warning centre in 1983 when computers wrongly detected incoming missiles from the US. Although his training dictated he should contact the Soviet military immediately, Petrov instead called the duty officer at army headquarters and reported a system malfunction. Petrov, who retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel, died on 19 May but news of his passing became widely known only this month, thanks to a chance phone call. German film-maker Karl Schumacher, who first brought Petrov's story to an international audience, telephoned him to wish him a happy birthday on 7 September only to be informed by his son, Dmitry Petrov, that he had passed away. Internet shutdowns raise free speech concerns in India

Government interference with Indians' internet usage has risen steadily in recent years, leading to fears authorities are attempting to curb free speech, digital advocacy groups say. An increase in internet shutdowns since Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office in 2014 has raised questions about online rights under his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Government officials ordered 42 internet shutdowns between January and August, compared to six times in all of 2014, according to data from the New Delhi-based advocacy group Software Freedom Law Centre (SFLC). Nalin Kohli, a national spokesperson for the BJP, said suspending access to the internet was acceptable in cases "where rumour-mongering or motivated misinformation could lead to the incitement of violence". Previous bans on mobile internet services in Indian-administered Kashmir, where about 100 people have died in clashes since a separatist commander was killed in July 2016, were condemned by the Office of the

Ancient Maya King Found in 'Centipede Dynasty' Tomb

As researchers were wrapping up excavations in El Perú Waka’, a small settlement in northern Guatemala, one scientist unexpectedly found the hidden bones of an ancient Maya ruler. “He accidentally came into the foot of that tomb, and there they stared at the bones of the king,” said research co-director David Freidel. The team of archaeologists and anthropologists from the El Perú Waka’ Archaeological Project then proceeded to call in the Guatemalan army to secure the region—standard procedure to prevent looting, Freidel said. The remains are a male, buried “head to the east, wrapped in textile, and placed on top of his offering vessels,” said Freidel. All of those are signs of the figure’s importance, leading the team to conclude that this was a member of the ruling class. Read more

Allegri Not The Reason For Defender's Juve Exit

Leonardo Bonucci's decision to leave six-time reigning Serie A champions Juventus for rivals AC Milan was not due to a falling out with head coach Massimiliano Allegri, according to his wife. "His decision wasn't due to an argument with Max Allegri," Maccari said. "In a professional setting, I think balance between all parties is fundamental. Leonardo chose to leave because of the vicissitudes within the environment, but now he's calm and giving his all for this new adventure." The 30-year-old's departure from Turin, shortly after Juve lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League final, sparked speculation of a row with Allegri. Read more

Hazard: I Improved After a Week With Conte At Chelsea

Eden Hazard said he improved after just a week working with head coach Antonio Conte at Stamford Bridge. The Belgium international heaped praise on Conte, saying: "Even after a week I think I had progressed with him. But I think he's shown not just at Chelsea but also at Juve that he's a good coach and I think he has some good years ahead of him." Hazard, who is set to make his first club start of the campaign against Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup Wednesday following an injury-interrupted pre-season, added: "There's a lot of tactics. It's not always nice as a forward as you have to run, defend and everything, but at least at the weekend, you know exactly what to do, you can even close your eyes and play. That's good. "We work a lot. It's not always easy in training, there are a lot of hours of training, but it bears fruit on the pitch." Read more

Klopp says Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain ‘relieved’ to join Liverpool

Jürgen Klopp has claimed Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s move from Arsenal came as “a kind of relief” to the England international. The 24-year-old will make his first Liverpool start in the Carabao Cup tie at Leicester City on Tuesday, having made three substitute appearances since signing for an initial £35m on transfer deadline day. “It would be strange for me to say it after two and half weeks when Arsène Wenger said this after working with him for six years. But a new start is very often a kind of relief, that’s how it is. You are in a situation with your old club – and I don’t say this about Alex specifically – and you accept it and it is difficult to make the next step. “I thought it made complete sense for Alex to change club and to come here. So far I can’t see that [he lacks self-belief]. He has settled in perfectly. He knows the situation. He played all the games for Arsenal from the beginning and now he comes here and is on the bench so it looks ‘Oh, not the best decision’

Herrea Sees No Reason For De Gea To Head to Madrid

Ander Herrera sees no reason why Manchester United team-mate David De Gea would leave the club for Real Madrid, as the midfielder is adamant they are not far behind the Spanish giants. Herrera expects that Madrid will bid for De Gea again in the coming years, but the 28-year-old is confident that United's trajectory has them on a similar level to the reigning European champions. "I respect all the keepers like Manuel Neuer, Gianluigi Buffon and Marc-Andre ter Stegen," Herrera said. "But David right now is the number one in the world. He wants to be a legend at the club which is important for us. He has that quality. In Spanish we say it comes from God. He makes a difference. He intimidates strikers. Real Madrid are going to talk about him every summer because he is the best keeper in the world. But we don't think we are far from Real Madrid." Read more

No room for Australia, New Zealand in Asian Games: OCA chief

The influential head of the Olympic Council of Asia has dashed hopes that athletes from Oceania nations, including Australia and New Zealand, might be able to compete in the Asian Games from 2022. Athletes from the two countries took part in the Asian Winter Games as "guests" in Sapporo earlier this year and the Australian Olympic Committee said talks were being held about extending the invitation to the summer versions. 19 Oceania nations are represented for the first time at the ongoing Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Turkmenistan but OCA President Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah said the Asian Games was already too big. "I hope at the next Indoor Games we will have the same experience and Oceania will continue with us in the Indoor Games," he said. ”With the Asian Games we are already at 15,000 athletes and officials and we cannot add to that number." TENNIS: Electronic calls to replace line judges at Next Gen Finals

Line judges face an uncertain future after the ATP announced that they will be replaced by "electronic line calls" at this year's inaugural Next Gen Finals in Milan. For the first time at an ATP event, the chair umpire will be the only official on court, with 'Hawk-Eye Live' technology used to judge whether shots are in or out. The Next Gen ATP Finals in November, which will be contested by the top eight players aged 21 and under, will feature a range of new innovations including a shot clock and short sets. "This could be a landmark moment for officiating in our sport," Gayle David Bradshaw, executive vice president of the ATP's Rules and Competition department, said. "Working with the ATP has allowed us to refine the system to not only improve the quality of line calling, but the overall fan experience," he said in a statement. Read More

MOTORCYCLING: Rossi not ruling out return in Spain this weekend

Italian great Valentino Rossi has not ruled out a return to MotoGP in Spain this weekend, three weeks after breaking his right leg, after getting back on a bike for some test laps on Monday. "He will decide by the end of Wednesday... whether he will attempt to take part in this weekend's Gran Premio Movistar de Aragon," Yamaha said. "I was told he felt a lot of pain in his right leg, but he could not determine in so few laps whether a return at Aragon could be possible," he said. It will be McIlroy's fourth appearance at the British Masters, which he previously played in 2005, 2007 and 2008 before the tournament went off schedule for five years from 2009. "I kind of had it in the back of my mind that if I didn't make the Tour Championship then there was a chance to tee it up at Close House, so I have decided to do that before finishing my season off the next week at the Dunhill Links," he said. "If I can sign off the year with a win or two in Newcastle and then St Andrews I would take so many positives into my six-week recovery period when I am going to reset mentally and physically and concentr

Man Utd boss Mourinho maintains faultless Sunday record

Manchester United's 4-0 victory over Everton on Sunday allowed Jose Mourinho to stretch a remarkable run of results on home soil. The Portuguese has enjoyed a glittering coaching career, with major honours landed at Porto, Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid and United. Much of that success has been built on an ability to pick up results in front of his respective club’s loyal supporters. His record has continued at Old Trafford, with Mourinho still to suffer a defeat when his side play at home on a Sunday. To have gone 105 games unbeaten is some achievement by the experienced coach. Mourinho will not get the opportunity to build on his fine run any time soon, with United having only one more Sunday contest to take in on their upcoming fixture list - and that is a trip to Stamford Bridge on November 5 to face their manager's former club, Chelsea. Mourinho refuses to be drawn on length of Pogba absence

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has described rumours that Paul Pogba is set for 12 weeks on the sidelines as "nonsense information". Pogba suffered a hamstring injury during Tuesday's Champions League win over Basel, and missed United's comprehensive 4-0 victory over Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday. The club have yet to announce how long the France international will be out of action for, but Mourinho has been quick to pour cold water on suggestions he might be unavailable for up to three months. Mourinho said: "I don't know if it is 12 weeks or 12 days. Any comment or rumour is totally wrong. "The player was diagnosed initially after the match because of the conditions of the muscle. "The decision was one more week to wait to see clearly in the scans. Nobody in this club spoke about 12 days or 12 weeks. It's complete nonsense information." Read more

Former Kano State Governor Shekarau Mocks President Buhari

Former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau has described the "change" mantra of his party as a ruse. In an audio recording exclusively obtained by SaharaReporters, Mr. Shekarau said the APC is confused and has been lying to Nigerians about bringing change to their living conditions. "When Nigerians asked: 'When are we going to see the change we voted for?' They were told to wait until after swearing-in ceremony. After the swearing-in, they heard silence without change and they asked, when will this change come. The answer was until they resume office and they subsequently resumed office and nothing happened," said Mr. Shekarau. The former governor added that when the masses asked again when to expect the change promised, they were told to wait until the appointment of the Secretary to the Government of Federation (SGF). Biblical prophecy claims the world will end on Sept. 23

A Christian numerologist claims that the world will end next Saturday when a planet will, supposedly, collide with Earth. According to Christian numerologist David Meade, verses in Luke 21:25 to 26 are the sign that recent events, such as the recent solar eclipse and Hurricane Harvey, are signs of the apocalypse. Sept. 23 is a date that was pinpointed using codes from the Bible, as well as a "date marker" in the pyramids of Giza in Egypt. Meade's views are not endorsed by Roman Catholic, Protestant or Eastern Orthodox branches of Christianity. Meade has built his theory on the so-called Planet X, which is also known as Nibiru, which he believes will pass Earth on Sept. 23, causing volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and earthquakes, according to British newspaper The Sun. Lajovic ran out of steam in the final set and Tsonga broke twice to send the home team through to the Nov. 24-26 final against Belgium, who beat Australia 3-2 in Brussels Read full ar

UN's Guterres urges Kurds in Iraq to scrap referendum

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged Kurds in Iraq to scrap plans to hold a referendum on independence later this month, arguing it would detract from the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group. Guterres said in a statement on Sunday that any dispute between the Iraqi government and the Kurdistan regional government should be resolved through dialogue and "constructive compromise". Iraq's Kurdish region plans to hold the referendum on support for independence from Iraq on September 25 in three governorates that make up their autonomous region, and in disputed areas controlled by Kurdish forces, but which are claimed by Baghdad. Guterres said, "any unilateral decision to hold a referendum at this time would detract from the need to defeat ISIL". It would also undermine reconstruction efforts and the return of refugees, he added. Read full article here

German far-right party calls for Merkel to be punished

Germany's leading right-wing party will press for Chancellor Angela Merkel to be "severely punished" for her immigration policies once it assumes a place in parliament, its leader said on Sunday. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is projected to win up to 12 percent of the vote during Germany's federal election on September 24 and become the third-largest party in the Bundestag, polls show. Alexander Gauland, co-founder of the AfD, told Reuters news agency the party would push for the creation of a new committee to examine Merkel's track record on refugees and migrants entering the country. "We want Merkel's policy of bringing one million people into this country to be investigated, and we want her to be severely punished for that," he said. "We're gradually becoming foreigners in our own country." It was unclear what Gauland meant by "punishment Read full article here

North Korea tests missile

North Korea claims to have conducted its first successful test of a long-range missile that it says can "reach anywhere in the world." Tuesday morning's missile test reached a height of 2,802 kilometers (1,741 miles), according to state broadcaster Korea Central Television, which would be the* *highest altitude a North Korean missile had ever reached. The country claimed it was an intercontinental ballistic missile, or ICBM, which would put the United States on notice that Pyongyang could potentially hit the US mainland. US military analysts believe it probably was a two-stage ICBM, said a US official with knowledge of the Americans' analysis Read full article here

Real Sociedad 1 Real Madrid 3

Borja Mayoral and Gareth Bale did the damage as a depleted Real Madrid avoided dropping points for the third LaLiga game in a row by beating Real Sociedad 3-1 at Anoeta on Sunday in a commendable display. Madrid's hosts went into the match having won all three of their previous league games, but Zinedine Zidane's men rose to the challenge despite being without Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcelo and Karim Benzema, as Mayoral had a hand in the first two goals, before the under-fire Bale - who was otherwise quiet - wrapped things up. The reigning champions looked in fine shape right from the start against an in-form La Real and were fully deserving of the lead when Mayoral – making his first LaLiga start since this fixture in April 2016 – slammed home 19 minutes in. Real Sociedad's Kevin Rodrigues endured a turbulent half, as he initially levelled in 28th minute, before then seeing another effort hit the crossbar in a passage of play that ended with the left-back scoring an own

Paris Saint-Germain 2 Lyon 0

Two late own goals helped Paris Saint-Germain maintain their 100 per cent record in Ligue 1 with a hard fought 2-0 win over Lyon at the Parc des Princes. The hosts were some way off their free-flowing best, with their vaunted attacking trio of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani struggling to break down a stubborn Lyon backline for much of Sunday's encounter. Lyon's resistance was finally broken with 15 minutes remaining when Marcelo got the final touch to Cavani's flick to score an unfortunate own goal.ot the final touch to Cavani's flick to score an unfortunate own goal. Cavani then saw a penalty brilliantly saved by Anthony Lopes before another own goal - this time from Jeremy Morel - added an undeserved gloss to the scoreline four minutes from time. Lyon were left to rue their luck at either end of the field, having seen Tanguy NDombele's thunderous second-half effort cannon against the crossbar at 0-0. Highlights Read full article here

NEYMAR GOES TO TAKE PSG PENALTY — BUT CAVANI WAVES HIM OFF

Neymar may have cost €222 million, but that doesn't mean he's entitled to take Paris Saint-Germain's penalties. The Brazilian star walked up to the spot after PSG earned a spot-kick in the 78th minute of Sunday's Ligue 1 match against Lyon, with Unai Emery's side protecting a 1-0 lead. But Edinson Cavani had gotten there first, and the Uruguayan striker waved off Neymar before seeing his effort denied by Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes. That set piece wasn't the only point of contention for the PSG team-mates on Sunday. Earlier in the match, Cavani had his eyes on a dangerous free-kick before Dani Alves took the ball and made sure it ended up in the hands of his long-time friend Neymar. Real Madrid equal Santos' run of 73 consecutive games scoring

Real Madrid have equaled the record of scoring in 73 consecutive matches set by Santos in 1963, after Borja Mayoral put them ahead against Real Sociedad. The run began on April 30th, 2016, coincidentally also at Anoeta with Gareth Bale giving Los Blancos a 1-0 victory and since then no defence has been able to hold them at bay. First they bettered the Spanish record that Barcelona had of scoring in 44 straight games and after that they overcame the European best of 61 by Bayern Munich before now equaling the all-time best set by Pele's Santos. Japan PM may hold snap 👆🏼 election this year‼️

Japanese premier Shinzo Abe is considering a snap election as early as next month, reports said Sunday, as he sees recovering public support with attention focused on tensions over North Korea. Abe floated the idea of holding a vote on October 22 or October 29 in meetings with senior ruling party officials, Jiji Press and the Asahi Shimbun reported, citing unnamed government and ruling party sources. The reports come as Abe has seen a recovery in public support after the figures plummeted in the past few months because of a series of problems, including allegations of favouritism to a friend in a business deal that Abe strongly denies. Public support for Abe had fallen to the lowest level of his premiership in July, but since has recovered as Pyongyang raised global tensions with repeated missile and nuclear tests including missile launches over Japan. His popularity is now hovering around 40 percent. To read full article on Yahoo

Koeman takes swipe at Mourinho after 'top four' claim

Ronald Koeman was baffled by Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho's claim that Everton should be targeting the top four after spending £140million, insisting his new players are allowed time to adapt. Everton were comprehensively beaten 4-0 by United at Old Trafford on Sunday, a result which condemned Koeman's side to a fourth successive defeat in all competitions. Their transfer dealings are estimated to be in excess of £140m, a fact that led Mourinho to suggest in his programme notes that Everton should be looking to finish in the top four. But that claim did not sit well with Koeman, who pointed to the first-season struggles of Henrikh Mkhitaryan as an example of some players needing a year to fully adapt. "Every manager in life has doubts," Koeman told reporters. "If you don't win and you have a big number of players in your squad, you have doubts about the system. But that's normal. "I ask the question of myself. If Mkhitaryan gets

One day Rooney will be back home, says Mourinho

Jose Mourinho has predicted Wayne Rooney will return to Manchester United in the future and insists he was not surprised to see the forward warmly welcomed back to Old Trafford by the club's fans. The 31-year-old returned to his former ground with Everton in his first appearance against United, with whom he spent a successful 13 years, since re-joining his boyhood club in July. United ran out 4-0 winners, but Rooney was substituted with eight minutes remaining when the deficit was just one and was afforded a huge ovation by the home supporters, as well as receiving a handshake from Mourinho on the touchline. Manager Mourinho praised his side's fans for their respect and is confident Rooney, the captain during his first season in charge at Old Trafford, will be back in some capacity in the future. I can only speak about Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford, and in both stadiums when you have former players, the reception is normally phenomenal. "I think every club in

Alaves sack Zubeldia after woeful start

Alaves have sacked head coach Luis Zubeldia as the club lie bottom of La Liga after four matches. Zubeldia was appointed as a replacement for Southampton's Mauricio Pellegrino at the start of the season, but his side endured a torrid start to his tenure. Golf: Leishman five clear of Day and Fowler after third round at BMW

Marc Leishman wants to raise his profile on the PGA Tour, and he took a step toward doing that when he opened a five-stroke lead in the third round at the BMW Championship outside Chicago on Saturday. Leishman left the world's best players in his wake with a solid if unspectacular three-under-par 68 at Conway Farms in Lake Forest, Illinois. He posted a 19-under 194 total, while fellow Australian Jason Day and American Rickie Fowler both shot 70 to share second place on 14-under, with Englishman Justin Rose (66) alone on 12-under. "I'm really happy to make a couple of birdies coming in and put a little space between me and the other guys," Leishman said after a deft chip at the par-five 18th for a closing birdie. Only the top 30 players in the FedExCup points standings will advance to next week's Tour Championship in Atlanta, where a $10 million bonus will be awarded to the season-long champion. Balkan delight as Serbia and Slovenia lock horns

When regional rivals Serbia and Slovenia clash for the European basketball title on Sunday, any outcome will spell victory for the Balkans where passion and natural talent for the game are considered second to none in Europe. Both countries emerged from the former Yugoslavia's bloody break-up and, having enjoyed contrasting basketball fortunes so far, they will lock horns for continental supremacy and local bragging rights. Up to 5,000 fans from each country are expected to make the trip to Istanbul while thousands more will pack bars at home for what should be gripping a final. Both teams have knocked out wealthier and more resourceful rivals en route to the showdown, with Slovenia mauling outgoing champions Spain 92-72 in a one-sided semi-final. Serbia, the World and Olympic silver medalists who also finished runners-up at the 2009 Eurobasket, beat Russia 87-79 on Friday to reach the final with a second-string team missing seven regular starters. PV Sindhu Wins Korea Open Super Series Title

PV Sindhu won the Korea Open Super Series title with a 22-20, 11-21, 21-18 win over Japan's Nozomi Okuhara. With the win, Sindhu exacted revenge for last month's defeat to the same opponent in the final of the world championship in Glasgow. The first game was a tightly-contested affair, with neither player really asserting herself on the match. Okuhara had two game points at 20-10, but Sindhu reeled off four points in a row to take the set. But the Japanese came out all guns blazing in the second set, and Sindhu was blown off the court in the second game. The Indian had no answer to Okuhara's pace of movement and deceptive shots, as a decider was forced. Sindhu didn't let the momentum shift in the second set affect her, as she calmly went about her business, and raced into an 11-5 lead at the mid-game interval. And she did not let the momentum slip, even as the Japanese upped the ante after the interval, going for broke with her shots, attacking Sindhu from all p

North Korea says it is seeking military 'equilibrium' with U.S.

North Korea said on Saturday it aims to reach an “equilibrium” of military force with the United States, which earlier signaled its patience for diplomacy is wearing thin after Pyongyang fired a missile over Japan for the second time in under a month. “Our final goal is to establish the equilibrium of real force with the U.S. and make the U.S. rulers dare not talk about military option,” North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was quoted as saying by the state news agency, KCNA. Kim was shown beaming as he watched the missile fly from a moving launcher in photos released by the agency, surrounded by several officials. To read full article click here

Montenegrin goalkeeper Lenac shot and killed while training

Goran Lenac, a goalkeeper who once graced the Montenegrin top-flight, has been shot and killed while training with a friend. The incident occurred on Saturday evening at around 7:30pm local time. Lenac was at the FC Bokelj training ground when he was fatally wounded by a gunshot to the head. The 33-year-old was rushed to hospital in critical condition, with a medical facility in Risan later confirming that he had passed away. Lenac had been on the books of top tier outfit Bokelj as recently as 2015 and was using his ties to the club to stay in shape. He was a popular figure in the community, with former team-mates and those who knew him revealing that he was a committed athlete who often helped to fund the development of aspiring stars out of his own pocket. Local media in Montenegro - skalaradio.com - have reported that the shooter must have known the area as he was able to escape quickly in the dark without being caught. It is also claimed that shots were fired into the

South Korea says Moon and Trump agree on need for stronger North Korea sanctions

South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in and Donald Trump have agreed to exert more pressure through sanctions on North Korea following its nuclear and missile tests, South Korea’s presidential office said after a telephone call between the two leaders on Sunday. “The two leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation, and exert stronger and practical sanctions on North Korea so that it realizes provocative actions leads to further diplomatic isolation and economic pressure,” Blue House spokesman Park Soo-hyun said. The Blue House said Moon and Trump had strongly condemned the latest missile launch by North Korea, and agreed that the two nations would work with the international community to implement the latest UN Security Council’s resolution 2375, Park said. Army to launch Operation Crocodile in S’South, S’West

As Operation Python Dance in the South-East region continues to generate controversy, the Nigerian Army said on Saturday that it would launch an operation, Crocodile Smile II, which would cover the South-South region and some parts of the South-West. The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman, said this in an interview with Signature TV on Saturday, monitored by our correspondent. The army spokesman noted that “encouraging feedback” from the South-East after Python Dance I made the army commence Python Dance lI. He said, “Look, this is the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Nigerian military belongs to Nigeria and they have a duty to exercise in any part of the country. It is so sad that some people try to politicise these issues. They should have exercised patience and seen how this exercise would go. “We had Operation Harbin Kunama II covering the North-West and parts of the North-Central this year. As soon as we are done with Egwu Eke II (Python Dance), we ar

Mourinho: Premier League the hardest to win

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho believes it has never been more difficult to win the Premier League title. United have made a flying start to the season, scoring 12 goals to collect 10 points from their opening four league games. Mourinho, whose team host Everton on Sunday, led Chelsea to three Premier League titles, but the Portuguese tactician feels it has never been tougher in England. "I think it is more difficult now," he said. "The economic power belongs to everyone. "When you speak about economic power, it is not just to buy but to keep players and say, 'No, we don't sell'. That power belongs to every club in the Premier League, so the teams are potentially strong. "But it was always difficult for different reasons. It is difficult because this is the country with more teams that fight for the title." To read full article - HERE

Keane picking Everton over Manchester United

Everton defender Michael Keane revealed why he rejected a move to Manchester United, saying he felt he would get more game time at Goodison Park. The England international opted against a return to United, where he came through as a youth player and made five senior appearances, in the close-season. Instead, Keane, 24, joined Everton in a reported £25million move from Burnley, signing a five-year contract. "They [United] were in touch with my agent and showed a lot of interest," Keane told The Times. "They wanted me, but a few things happened and I thought Everton would be the best place for me to come. "I thought I would get a lot of game time here, more than I possibly would at Manchester United, and that was a massive factor in my decision." Keane added his love for United, the club he left permanently in 2015, had lessened after spending three seasons at Burnley. "To be honest, having been at Burnley for three years, I wasn't a fan of

Atletico move into the future at wonderful Wanda Metropolitano

The future starts here for Atletico Madrid. For a club so fond of remembering the past, the Paseo de los Melancólicos and the glory days at the old but always atmospheric Vicente Calderon, the move to the Wanda Metropolitano was difficult for some supporters to take. When they saw their new home, however, everything changed. Saturday's spectacular inauguration of Atletico's new stadium will live long in the memory and afterwards, coach Diego Simeone admitted: "I have never seen anything like it. I will remember it for the rest of my life." He will not be the only one. Atletico beat Malaga 1-0 thanks to an Antoine Griezmann goal in the second half, the France forward perhaps a fitting first scorer at the new stadium, further cementing his status as a symbol for this club. But the football was secondary on a day of celebration for Atletico fans, with the Wanda Metropolitano close to its capacity of almost 68,000 - and the supporters clearly liked what they sa

North Korea launches unidentified missile over Japan

North Korea fired an unidentified missile eastward from the Sunan district in its capital, Pyongyang, South Korea’s military said. The South Korean and US militaries were analysing details of the launch, South Korea’s joint chiefs of staff said. Japan’s public broadcaster NHK said the missile passed over the northern island of Hokkaido and landed in the Pacific about 2,000 km east of Japan. The government said there was no danger to people or shipping from missile debris. South Korea’s presidential Blue House has called an urgent meeting of its national security council. The launch comes a day after Pyongyang threatened to sink Japan and reduce the United States to “ashes and darkness” for supporting a UN security council resolution imposing new sanctions against it for its 3 September nuclear test.
